When we informally asked master's level students and faculty to tell us what class-based obstacles create barriers to enrollment and completion in counseling programs, here's what they cited:
The total cost of a master's degree in counseling vs. expected salaries
Lack of any funding for students other than loans
Funding that provides wages below the poverty level and forbids students from having outside jobs
Expectation that students give up full-time jobs to attend school
Unpaid internships
Lack of childcare for students who are parents
Lack of support for students who are caring for elderly parents
Use of GRE for admissions
Have you noticed other class-based obstacles to success within counselor training programs? Tell us about it!
