December 6, 2024 from 12-2 PM EST - FREE, no CE credit available
Summary of Session: Social class and classism are important but underexplored topics within counseling. This presentation discusses how social class and classism impact students in counseling training programs. It provides results of The Counseling Student Census, a survey exploring how counseling students are positioned with respect to socioeconomic class and the experiences they have with classist assumptions as they go through their training programs. Implications and directions for future research will be discussed
Learning Objectives: It is expected that, by the end of the program, participants will be able to:
1) Understand the definition of social class, class privilege and classism
2) Identify the various forms of capital related to social class
3) Understand how a student's possession of different forms of capital can impact their learning and opportunities within counselor education programs
4) Discuss the results of a survey on social class and classism within counselor education and its implications for training programs and the profession at large
