When we asked faculty and students in doctoral programs to tell us about class-based obstacles to a doctoral a degree that they had observed, here's what they said:
Cost of a doctoral degree
Lack of available funding for a doctoral degree outside of loans
When funding is available it provides wages below the poverty level and forbids students from having outside jobs
Expectation of attending conferences and presenting with no funding opportunities to cover costs
Expectation of paying dues to multiple professional organizations and engaging in extracurricular activities in order to be considered a strong candidate for a teaching position
Have you seen other examples of class-based obstacles in doctoral programs? Tell us about it!
